Chautauqua County is the most western county in the state of New York. Mayville, NY serves as the county seat of Chautauqua County, but Jamestown, NY is the largest city in the county. According to the U.S. Census of 2010, Chautauqua County has a population of 134,905. The county is situated along the shore of Lake Erie.
Prior to the Beaver Wars in the 1650s, most of present-day Chautauqua County belonged to the Erie People. After the Beaver Wars, the land was owned by the Seneca Nation, who held it for most of the 18th century. Chautauqua County was organized during the development of Western New York after the American Revolutionary War. It was officially separated from Genesee County in 1808, and was completely organized in February of 1811.
