Fredonia is a small village located in Chautauqua County, New York. The village of Fredonia is part of the town of Pomfret, boarding the city of Dunkirk, NY. Fredonia is one of 12 villages in the state of New York that is still incorporated under a charter. According to the United States Census of 2016, the village of Fredonia has a population of approximately 10,639.
The area that is present-day Fredonia belonged to various Native American tribes up until the late 18th century. In 1821, the first well was dug along Canadaway Creek in Fredonia to produce natural gas. By 1858, the Fredonia Gas Light Company was formed, making it the first American natural gas company in history. Today, Fredonia is most well-known as the home of the State University of New York at Fredonia.
