Salamanca is a city located in Cattaraugus County, New York. It is situated inside the Allegheny Indian Reservation, which is one of two reservations governed by the Seneca Nation of New York. The land that is present-day Salamanca was originally divided into two separate communities on Little Valley Creek and Great Valley Creek. The westernmost community, Hemlock, was eventually renamed West Salamanca before later becoming incorporated as the city of Salamanca in 1913. Salamanca, NY is named after Jose de Salamanca, who was a Spanish nobleman during the mid-19th century.
